IN Chicago Business and Social Blog

The IN Chicago Business and Social Blog is an information sharing forum for the Chicago IN Community. We invite social, artistic and businesses organizations or individuals (established, newly arrived or soon-to-arrive) to submit short blog postings to get their word out. We especially welcome postings from businesses looking to hire and new arrivals in Chicago looking for career opportunities. We  will also post information about upcoming events that are of interest to our members (please submit event posts at least two weeks in advance of event).

All posts are moderated and IN Chicago ultimately decides what is posted. No product sales pitches please!

To submit a blog post, please email us  the text exactly as you should appear (150 words max). Include an email address in the post if you wish to be contacted (resumes in pdf format can be attached to posts on request).

A true story of life in the aftermath of the Famine;  Thorpe walks her grandmother through everyday life in the chaos of the  Red Light District Dublin and the unfolding history of the 1916 Easter Rising and the War of Independence .

Thorpe compellingly incorporates history into her grandmothers story making sure to bring the narrative back to Bridget’s life and personal experience. This is a compelling story of a strong capable woman who managed to keep herself and her seven children out of the workhouse; when her husband died at the very young age 36years; as it encapsulates the unfolding history that surrounds her.

Critically acclaimed author and story teller David McDonnell will be at Uncharted Books in Chicago to discuss his book, talk about Irish history, and tell a few entertaining stories about an ancient Celtic clan. The session is on Tuesday, March 10th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Uncharted Books is at 2620, North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago’s Logan Square.

McDonnell is an accomplished storyteller who blends true stories of Ireland with both wit and blarney. His book, ClanDonnell: A Storied History of Ireland, tells the stories of people in the Celtic Irish McDonnell clan and their subsequent descendants. Since the first McDonnells were mercenaries, they were called into service in all corners of Ireland and interacted – often violently – with other Irish clans.

Over time, the McDonnells faced the same troubling forces as all Irish – brutal clan wars, religious strife, subjugation by the English, confiscation of lands, famine and starvation, mass emigration, struggles for national identity and independence … and much more. Thus the stories of the McDonnells reflect the stories of all Irish, from any clan.

Each year Cork City and County liaise with Cook County on a trade mission to Chicago around the St. Patrick’s Day festivities. This year Cork Convention Bureau is lucky enough to be joining this group and we are looking to meet with meeting and event planners that have an interest in Ireland.

As part of our #CorkNeedsYou Conference & Event Ambassador Programme we are also looking for Corkonians who can influence international events to come to Cork. This could be through their membership of an international association – scouts, firefighters, karate etc, through their profession or through their academic work .

Cork is a great new exciting and authentic option for your clients. Maybe the following will whet your appetite

If you know of an event you would like to bring to Cork or would like more information on what the Cork region has to offer we would love to meet you. Our Chairman, Seamus Heaney, will be visiting Illinois the week before St. Patrick’s Day, from March 9th, and is available to meet throughout this time. Please email for more details.

My sales history started in 1991 when I took a position with Butler Packaging, Inc. in Arlington Heights Illinois and quickly succeeded in selling packaging films and tapes and custom boxes.  Sysco Foods( parent of Palas Foods) and Crate&Barrel and Xerox were some of my top accounts.  I continued for many years cultivating my skills from some of the stock material sales into packaging equipment.  Coordination of experts towards a better relation with my customer base allowed me to become a more important and secure vendor and broadened my ability to garner new relations.  I was quickly the number one salesman and held that status when Butler Packaging, Inc. morphed into Packaging Network.  My stay there was for 9 solid years before helping start Best Packaging, Inc. of which I was a minority owner. The last 15 years with them have focused on turnkey lines and our own machine designs that we hold " patent pending" status on.  I am currently excited to sell in a different arena, thank you.
